dr. vs. nurse practitioner, what’s the difference:pros cons?

Question by sky b: dr. vs. nurse practitioner, what’s the difference:pros cons?
I really wanted to be a doctor, but everytime I say so, I keep hearing that nurse practitioner is the way to go because of insurance and malpractice, nurse practitioners have the same abilities as dr’s but there’s a little difference, does anyone have any further insight? I have a lot to think about. thanks very much!

Well, NP’s don’t have all of the same abilities. You won’t be able to do surgeries or anything like that but otherwise they do similar things.

I think the biggest difference is that NP’s tend to be more active in holistic ways of healing and more into disease prevention and education than doctors are. MD’s typically have a broader range of medical knowledge as well, while NP’s tend to focus on one particular part of medicine.

MD’s make $ 30k more on average and also have more potential for higher earnings. Of course, if you are willing to do 8 years of education MD is probably the way to go. However, if you are doing the NP thing I think you still end up going like 5-6 years because you need a masters in nursing.

There really no right or wrong answer here because it will totally depend on your situation.

Check with your employer and see if they carry a policy on you. If not, join a professional nurses organization, and you should be able to get some insurance through them. I think we paid $ 165 for one year for my husband, though I don’t remember how much it was for.

We have gone back and forth about getting it over the years. The first year my husband was in nursing, he insisted we get it. The second year he was told the hospital where he worked carried insurance on him and he didn’t need it. The third year he was told we could lose our house if we ever got sued, so we got it again. Two years ago one of the attorneys for the hospital told him that most lawyers won’t bother to name a nurse in the law suite UNLESS they have malpractice insurance, so having it was just inviting a lawsuit. Needless to say, after that, we didn’t bother getting it again.

How much will I need to pay in legal malpractice insurance?

legal malpractice insurance
by Leica 1A

Question by hawksocc8: How much will I need to pay in legal malpractice insurance?
I’m a recent law grad sitting for the bar in July. I’m trying to shop around for a quote for legal malpractice, but don’t want to go through the time of getting a full quote (especially since I’m not licensed yet).

I’d be looking for coverage for a solo practitioner, general practice, recent grad. Does anyone have any clue what that would run me, either from personal experience or whatever?

Answer by nowland2235
Unfortunately for me I do run quotes for that type of insurance (more commonly called Legal Professional Liability)but cannot do quotes for the State of California. For the type of practice you are describing would commonly cost only about $ 1200 per year. They two best companies that I have found as an independent agent, is Travelers and The Hartford, so that is who I would check with first.

You should ask in your school. You can’t buy malpractice, as a student, privately, from insurance.

Yes, it’s very expensive.

I have never heard of a training program in ANY health professional program that doesn’t cover it’s own students. You should check with your clinical instructor, you will undoubtedly find that there is a policy in place for the students.
